Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) rose from a farming family in Owari to become master of all Japan, counted among the three great unifiers of the late Sengoku age. He entered the service of Oda Nobunaga as a lowly sandal-bearer and, through battlefield merit and a quick, scheming mind, climbed step by step to the rank of general. When his lord fell in the Honnoji Incident, Hideyoshi avenged him at the Battle of Yamazaki, crushing the rebel Akechi Mitsuhide and inheriting the campaign of unification. In 1590 he subdued the Hojo at Odawara and brought the warring provinces under a single banner, ending an age of fracture. Ruling as Kanpaku and then Taiko, he enforced the Sword Hunt to disarm the countryside and ordered the Taiko land survey, separating warrior from farmer and laying the foundations of early-modern order.

The Sandal-Bearer Who Took the Realm
A peasant's son who climbed from servant to sovereign, and whose word alone can make an enemy lay down his blade.
History
On the Battlefield
A son of the East Asia, Hideyoshi marches as Infantry, fighting as a control and support commander who answers any melee press. His art is the art of disarmament: his strikes and abilities alike can rob a foe of the will to swing a blade, leaving them helpless before the front line, while his signature gear sharpens every blow against a disarmed mark. Where he stands, enemy attacks falter and the line bends to his command. He is less a slayer than a quartermaster of the battlefield — the man who collects his enemies' swords before they can be drawn.
