Queen Seondeok (Kim Deokman, ?–647) was the twenty-seventh ruler of Silla and the first queen in Korean history. She inherited a throne pressed on two sides — Baekje and Goguryeo hammering at her borders — and answered force with foresight. Where rivals saw a woman who could not hold a kingdom, she built one that would outlast them all: she bound Silla to Tang China through patient diplomacy, raised the great nine-story pagoda of Hwangnyongsa as a declaration that her small kingdom dreamed in continental scale, and ordered the building of Cheomseongdae, the star-gazing tower that still stands today as East Asia's oldest surviving observatory. Her sharpest instrument, though, was judgment of people. She elevated Kim Yu-sin, the general, and Kim Chun-chu, the diplomat who would reign as King Muyeol — the two men who would go on to unite the Three Kingdoms under Silla's banner a generation after her death. The chronicles of the Samguk Sagi remember her for exactly that gift: the queen who could read what was written in the stars, and what was hidden in the hearts of those who served her.
